Liberal Perspective on trump's america
My second project is all about perspective. Perspective on Liberals living in a time ruled by Republicans. In this project, I ask a Mexican man how he gets discriminated against daily, and a woman about how she feels with Brett Kavanaugh being appointed as Supreme Court judge. I take photos depicting the emotion and reaction to these events, and write a poem for each of them as if I were the person from their perspective.
History is made in seconds.
History is made with one headline.
Controversy is flooding the country left and right.
Hope seems to have left humanity.
We’ve made a lifelong appointment to a doctor’s office
we aren’t allowed to go to.
Disappointed but no surprise.
A bright, overwhelming, abrasive light is focused
in the middle as to blind us from everything else around us.
Warm hands hold cold, dark news
for a large portion of the world.
A welcoming home has become silent.
People have turned into prey to the positions
that are being held by predators.
One question looms over us: What comes next?
Sure Democrats and Republicans can get along, but we are becoming divided by our views. The constant twenty-four hour news cycle stirs the pot every headline. There is controversy between anything that shows up on TV day after day. Social media is not innocent, either. It is undeniably impressionable towards teens and young people. ThoughtCo stated, “The prevalence of social media in politics has made elected officials and candidates for public office more accountable and accessible to voters. And the ability to publish content and broadcast it to millions of people instantaneously allows campaigns to carefully manage their candidates’ images based on rich sets of analytics in real time and at almost no cost.”
Some of the morals of the Republicans, though, are completely arbitrary. The Republican agenda is focused on many unholy things. Their intentions are surely holy to them, but what is holy about deciding the right to women’s bodies? A CNN article stated, “When Trump ran for president in 2016, he pledged to appoint ‘pro-life’ justices to the Supreme Court, while his running mate, now-vice president Mike Pence, said that he hoped to see Roe v. Wade end up on the ‘ash heap of history.’” How can a single man, Mike Pence, have the nerve to speak for half of America? This may be how a representative democracy works, but this is one decision that should be an exception. This is not a decision one person can make. In May of this year, Phillipa Thomas of BBC News wrote an article that stated, “And the balance on the court matters hugely. What the Supreme Court decides can change everyday life in America for decades. As it has done with abortion.” This article is focused on the concern of keeping the democrat supreme court judges on for balance, and for life changing decisions.

My children will have to endure what I have witnessed
Before my own eyes.
“What do you expect?” is all I seem to say anymore.
A whirlwind of confusion and society in illusion
A facade that happens to be real.
It’s laughable actually, or is it?
Headlines so bright, it’s hard to miss it.
The only thing that we can do is power through the storm
And hope that the next day
Society won’t be torn.
With the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh on October 6, 2018, many were left feeling disturbed. Women especially were disappointed in the decision because of his morals and accusations of attempted rape. Clare Foran and Stephen Collinson from CNN wrote, “Still, it was a close-run thing: Kavanaugh's nomination was nearly derailed by Christine Blasey Ford's allegations that the judge assaulted her when they were teenagers in the 1980s, which sparked uproar…” Amanda Shifflet, a middle aged woman in America, claimed that she felt “...Very disappointed. In our government and our legal system...But what do you expect when Americans voted for a president who bragged about grabbing women by the pussy? But hey, it sure is a scary time for boys.”
Late September and early October of 2018, before Kavanaugh’s appointment, Donald Trump turned the tables on Americans in regards to men having accusations of sexual misconduct. He claimed, “It is a very scary time for young men in America,” amidst all of tension and actual misconduct that has been proven, and backed up by more than just one woman. The President himself, a man who admitted to being a sexual predator, has no right to be making biased statements about such a subject. I feel that it is common sense for any person in America, including the president, to not barge into such a topic when you have bad history with it. Independent news stated, “Mr Trump describes the women he has slept with in the past as his ‘victims’. If this isn’t enough evidence to prove that he is a sexual predator, there is an episode of the Howard Stern show where it is recorded that he admits it.

I walk out my doorstep to hear children scream
Scream at my kids for the color of their skin.
A bright and sunny day turns to grey when people stare
Stare at my daughter for being herself
Something she cannot change.
A bus ride home is not merely a bus ride,
But terrifying words echoing through los oidos de mis hijos (my children’s ears).
One trip to the store without glares from blue eyes would be ideal,
But I guess that’s too much to ask for
In a country run by its complementary color.
A Mexican man named Luis lives in the United States with citizenship. He faces discrimination on a weekly basis in the town that he has lived in for over 20 years. With the election of Trump in 2016, discrimination towards Mexicans and Mexican Americans has significantly gotten worse than before he was president. After Trump’s win, Luis and his family had people outside of their house screaming, “white power.” Luis explained, “I have (experienced discrimination) from both customers and fellow people I’ve worked with...nothing obvious but I feel like it’s just under the surface. I think that the overall tone and feeling has gotten worse, not necessarily directed at me.” This is not just a problem where they live. This has become a problem everywhere. Schools, workplaces, you name it. Washington post created an article 3 days after the election that stated, “The morning after Donald Trump became the nation’s 45th president, two students at York County School of Technology in Pennsylvania paraded through the hallways with a Trump sign, then another student shouted, ‘white power,’ police said.”
