reasoning...
This project was based around reasoning, meaning you have to explain reasons behind every aspect of your project.
what makes a folk song?
My third Apollo project is about problems in America, but portrayed through only four lines of lyrics for a folk song I have written. The catch is, a folk song is not always what it seems to be. My history for this project consisted of types of folk songs, and the information I used that went into the factual parts of my songs.
Folk music is mainly focused around political corruption, or social issues in a country or around the world. Most people associate the style of music with how it sounds, and as if it were its own genre. But really, folk music is determined by the content of the lyrics or a certain message the song gives out.
When people think of folk music, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, or other artists might come to mind. Most of the songs they wrote are centered around corruption of the government and war. “Masters Of War” by Bob Dylan is a great example, including lyrics like, “You that never done nothing/
But build to destroy/
You play with my world/
Like it’s your little toy.” In today’s music, we might hear a song with the same type of message and not realize that it is a folk song too. Run the Jewels released a song in 2014 called “Close Your Eyes.” One line in the song, “We out of order, your honor, you're out of order/
This whole court is unimportant, you fuckers are walkin' corpses,” pertains to the instability of the government in the writer’s eyes. In this case, this rap song could also be considered a folk song based off of the other protest inspired lyrics.
The reason why folk songs in the 60s and 70s were so popular is because they pertained to problems everyone during the time could relate to. Bob Dylan’s lyrics in “Masters of War” is his reaction to the war he is writing about, as well as the country’s reaction. Run The Jewels have been doing the same thing with lyrics about racial issues in America, but in a different style of music. Just because it is a rap song doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t a folk song as well.

For my English portion of my third project, I wrote those snippets of songs and I had comments on google drive explaining all of the reasoning I had for certain words I chose to use.
Here are my songs below:
“Ignorance Is Bliss”
Where were you when the world began to change?
It’s so hard to understand, your coming of age…
Your life depends on what you decide
And you signed up for the ride of your life.
“Suppressing Science…”
Oil spills from your mouth as ash falls from your head,
Engulfing the homes of innocent lives.
No room to breathe at the end of the oyster bed,
As the water reflects the black smoke sky.

Art
For my art portion, I wrote experimental songs on garageband and added strange effects to them to make them sound out of the ordinary.
